Vincenzo Florio acquires land on a strip of beach situated between the bagli (the wineries) of Ingham and Woodhouse, and builds the Florio winery in a typical Anglo-Saxon style of the times complete with lancet arches and floors of pressed tuff powder. The building inspired great admiration and improved the industrial nature of the city of Marsala helping it develop into one of Sicily’s richest business centres.

After 20 years, Cantine Florio acquires fame through its quality marsala. The on market saturation had not worried Vincenzo Florio because in the years between 1840 and 1845 he had diversified his interests to maritime transports, fabrics, metallurgy, tuna-fishing grounds and sulphur mines. The wine’s long ageing process helps the quality of the wine, so the long wait was not a problem but an advantage.

On May 6th the Targa Florio car race is born.
Organising an international car race at the beginning of the century on the streets of Sicily was an absolute crazy idea that only the instinct and acumen of Vincenzo Florio could conceive. In fact, the streets of the island were still characterised by the precarious Borbonic tracks, made of steep ups and downs, rough pave-ways, tortuous paths and unlimited roughness. This defects became, thanks to the intuition of Vincenzo Florio the fortune of the project. He didn’t omit any organisational details and called upon Lalique, refined representative of the Art Nouveau movement, to craft the trophy, used his own ships to ferry the participants to Sicily and called the best artists of the time to create a commercial campaign with billboards, posters and postcards. His efforts were rewarded: 30 cars enrolled for the race, a record number and obtained a huge popular success.
