Corvo Bianco and Corvo Rosso are born

Giuseppe Alliata, Prince of Villafranca, Prince of the Sacred Roman Empire, Grandee of Spain and Duke of Salaparuta, a passionate connoisseur of good wine, decides to produce a delicate, elegant, “french style” wine, from the grapes of his own estate located in Casteldaccia. The company’s first wines are born and are an absolute innovation compared to the island’s production at that time.

Corvo Bianco and Corvo Rosso are born.

Corvo Prima Goccia is born

Edoardo Alliata, Duke of Salaparuta, builds the Cantine di Casteldaccia and imports Mabille wine presses from France that allow to draw only the first pressed must. Corvo Prima Goccia is born.

Phylloxera in Europe

Phylloxera causes heavy financial losses across Europe. Duke Eduardo acquires American cuttings in France and prepares the land for the arrival of the parassite. Years later, while the vineyards throughout Italy are destroyed by the Phylloxera, Corvo’s countryside is covered with healthy vineyards.

Duca Enrico and the innovation

The interest of the Alliata family for Casteldaccia and its wines, is reached with Duke Enrico who followed the product diversification started by his grandfather Edoardo continuously adding new products and labels. Excellent winemaking capability, international studies, and sensibility made Duke Enrico a master of modern Italian winemaking.

Recognition from Roma to New York

Duke Enrico, thanks to Corvo wine, receives numerous awards from Italy and America.

The launch of Ala

Ala fortified wine is created by Duke Enrico for his wife Sonia de Ortusar as an accompaniment to her favourite food, chocolate. Ala, a wine born of love.

Duca Enrico and his company growth

Duke Enrico takes his company to new levels of recognition.
A man known for his innovative vision, Duke Enrico publishes one of the first books on vegetarian cuisine and creates a new line of wine labels.

Thanks to Duke Enrico’s work the company is recognised with 72 diplomas, 64 medals, and exclusive contracts with Real Casa, Embassies, and the authorisation from the Holy See to celebrate Mass with Corvo wine.

Topazia Alliata

Topazia Alliata is the last family member to run the company. The daughter of Duke Enrico di Salaparuta, married to Fosco Maraini and mother of Italian writer Dacia Maraini. Topazia Alliata, known for her strong and independent character, will run the family business with passion and strength.

Colomba Platino is born

Colomba Platino, one of the great Sicilian white wines, is born.
Its creation is the result of Topazia Alliata’s work and her following in her father’s teachings and steps coupled with a desire to create a superior white wine, delicate and elegant, for pairing exclusively with shellfish, seafood and lobster. Over fifty years later, this Insolia-made wine still retains the unique profile and charm of a forever class white wine.

Topazia, last of the Alliata family to run the business, hands it over to SOFIS – Regional Organisation for Industrial Development and Promotion. SOFIS – later ESPI, Organisation for Industrial Development and Production – restructures the managerial organisation, increases production and brings the company to be considered one of the best in its industry by the beginning of the 1980s.

The Region of Sicily begins its restructuring phase; in a few years regional production grows from 150.000 to 715.000 units. The national sales network is also restructured increasing export sales by 83%.

The launch of Duca Brut

Duca Brut Duca di Salaparuta is launched by the winery.
A sparkling wine made with the most carefully selected first-press must from Grecanico and Chardonnay grapes and produced with the Charmat method. Duca Brut is an elegant, fresh wine – in style and taste – with a complex bouquet of ripe fruit in harmony with nuances of bread crusts. Duca Brut is a uniquely satisfying drinking experience with an unmistakable personality.

7 millions of bottles

Duca di Salaparuta production reaches seven million bottles following a restructuring of company operation. The bottling lines are substituted with a new and completely automated plant.

Duca di Salaparuta produces a single-variety Nero d’Avola for the first time and inaugurates a new era of Sicilian winemaking.

The exports grow

Bianca di Valguarnera is born through careful study and research. A number of white wines made from Insolia grapes and ripened in vineyards on the hills of Salemi are selected for their structure, elegance and persistence.

Corvo produces three distinct lines “linea classica” (Corvo Bianco, Corvo Rosso, Corvo Rosato and Novello), “linea moderna” (Colomba Platino, Terra d’Agala) and “linea riserve” (Duca Enrico e Bianca di Valguarnera.) During this period of time Corvo also acquires the wineries at Aspra, amongst the first in Italy equipped with an advanced system for temperature monitoring and control.

Corvo launches the Terrae Dei line

Duca di Salaparuta launches the Calanìca label made up of two wines profoundly tied to their territory. Only the best grapes from historically vocated vineyards are used in Calanìca’s vinification for two great wines that perfectly blend one autochthonous and one international grape. These wines are characterised by a modern style that is pleasant, elegant and well structured while recalling their origins and terroir.

Seven new wines are launched

Duca di Salaparuta adds to its Tenute line with Nawàri and Triskelè. The former is a Pinot Noir from the Etna Vajasindi estate. The latter, a historical wine for the company, is now made at the Suor Marchesa estate. The Calànica brand line is also completed.
The Corvo brand launches Irmàna, a new line for off-premise distribution and confirms the success of the Glicine line with Glicine Rosso. Glicine Bianco was launched in 1994.
The Florio winery bottles a marsala reserve from 1994 celebrating the advertising from the ‘20s and ‘30s and winning important packaging awards for its labels.

Corvo expands its Irmàna line with “Corvo Irmàna Fiore”, a white fruity and fragrant wine,
and presents the new Duetto line of wines.
Duca di Salaparuta launches two fresh and elegant wines, Star and Moon, dedicated to those who love living the nightlife. Star & Moon, with their trendy and contemporary soul, are set to become the new protagonists in the most glamorous city night lives.
Florio’s versatile world is further enriched by an absolutely special product, Spumante Dolce Florio. An aromatic experience with a flourish of mediterranean flavours and citrus nuances, Florio is characterised by a cheerful and elegant image.

30 years of Duca Enrico

Produced for the first time in 1984, Duca Enrico is the first single varietal wine made from Nero d’Avola grapes in the history of Sicilian wines and one of the international icons of Made in Italy oenology. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this revolutionary wine, Duca di Salaparuta, in collaboration with Design Degree Course students from Turin Polytechnic, has created an exclusive Limited Edition which embodies its restless and original soul. A light structure, in which the bottles appears almost “suspended”, made from a single block of transparent polycarbonate and supported by four bars of burnished silver, contains three Duca Enrico vintages, each the symbol of a decade.

The challenge of Pinot Nero: the birth of Sciaranèra

Following Nawàri, the range of Duca di Salaparuta wines made with grapes grown in the Vajasindi Estate, on the slopes of Mount Etna, is enhanced by a new Pinot Nero: Sciaranèra. Vinified with grapes grown in the lower part of the Estate, Sciaranèra is a red wine in which fruit and spices become one harmony whose freshness is elegantly seductive. The most recent creation among the volcanic wines of Duca di Salaparuta, Sciaranèra represents the confirmation of the Brand’s commitment to the cultivation of this vine in a unique area of Sicily.

Renovation of the wine cellar of Casteldaccia

From 25 October 2017, Duca di Salaparuta’s wine tourism offer has been enriched thanks to the renovation and re-opening of the innovative Duca di Salaparuta Cellars in Casteldaccia (Palermo). Like the Florio Winery in Marsala, the Duca di Salaparuta Cellars are also driven by the desire to share the Company’s unique style with our guests through a varied thrilling and fascinating experience. The completely renovated Cellars are now open to the public enhanced by new spaces such as the charming Wine Shop, the modern tasting room and the luminous events room.
